Fashion Victim?

It was foggy this morning in London, with a misty rain.

I found it quite invigorating, if a little slippy in places.

Towards the end of my commute, I was running along Latchmere Road In London (Clapham) and saw a women riding in a flimsy semi see through mini dress, with short sleeves, Sheer tights and cowboy boots on, no lights, no gloves, just a dress and boots….she was doing about 30mph down hill and was soaked!

I was cold, she must have been freezing and she was virtually invisible!!! I wonder if, when considering her outfit, she spared a thought for what colours might go well with "Hospital Green".

Got to the next lights and a guy in a white tee shirt and suit trousers tucked in his socks…no coat, no lights also soaked and looking really miserable.


I'm amazed at what people choose to ride in (in all seasons) I can understand light and/or impractical clothes in the summer, especially if your ride is pretty short, but in the cold fog and misty rain…...have some sense!!!

That's very kind of you Jonny to offer thema coat but I suppose they'll remember to check out the weather report before they leave home next time!! Some people just care too much about how they look rather than being practical on the bike - more fool them I think, one of the things that is a shame about London is people just aren't sociable on the commutes otherwise it would be good to have a chat with them re waterproofs or as my flatmate calls them affectionately when I come rustling past 'binbags'. My past attempts at talking to people have been a mixed bag- ranging from hello to RLJing...ah well- you gotta love the capital

myself, I was fully head to toe waterproof with a bike hat, jacket, overtrousers, full gloves and overshoes - snug and warm!!

To be honest Jonny, thismorning was damp, but really not that cold and no wind.

Personally i'd rather be wearing less, be damp and keeping my body warm through working hard than normally getting the waterproofs out.

One can overdo it though, this morning was cold when I was getting dressed, on went full leggings and I put the warm jacket & full gloves near the door ready to go. An hour and a half later after getting the kids up, breakfasted, dressed, washed, lunches made and off to next door who was taking them to school with her son I finally set off. I arrived at work a trifle flushed.

This commute was an hour later than my usual one, the change in the volume of traffic was immense. Thankfully I am back to the early, peaceful ride tomorrow.

I have seen a lot of people in London cycling at night with no lights, I guess it is just because they want something to get them around with the least amount of money or fuss for accessories.

Perhaps it would be an idea for bike shops to sell these mountain bikes with lights attached (preferably no fuss dynamo or magnetic ones like Reelights). After all the vast majority of mountain-bikes are not used for their actual purpose.
