Would a copper actually pull you up for that?

He wouldn't pull up a moton for using a mobile phone so I think not.

What is the camera?

Sony HQ1 with an Archos 605 recorder. Got the bits from all over (details in this thread) but it's all fitted together nicely and I'm very pleased with it. Not sure the Wife's too impressed with the dent in the bank balance yet though.

Probably not. But that's what you learn when posting videos.

People will look at them and try and find the smallest, tiniest thing that you have done wrong in it to undermine any arguments you have made. Overall this is a good thing as it has forced me to ride as well as I possibly can, knowing that if something happens, and I post a video, it will be scrutinised.

My honest opinion of Sharkys video is that I wouldn't filter like that, certainly not at that speed, especially with junction where cars could suddenly decide to turn into (right turn that taxi comes out of). I've seen cars turn right without warning and if that happened here, sharky would have nowhere to go. Just my 2p!

All fair points. Knowing the road does allow me to have a pretty good idea which side roads are used (one earlier on is used extensively as it runs onto a road parallel to this one so people can avoid the queue), but you're right - if anyone did decide to turn I'd be pretty buggered! The advantage of the traffic coming the other way stops these numpties... but then makes for a different hazard in itself!!

I usually use the cycle lane on the left for filtering at this bit too, but I'd caught up with an RLJer from earlier in my commute and he was just in front when I started filtering (and was blocking the lane a bit) so I decided to use the off-side to get past.

Great fun, and looked pretty fast and close on the vid... much more so than it felt at the time. I think I was only doing about 20mph at that point but it looked much faster!

The RLJer caught up with me at the lights at the end of the vid... and went straight through.... grrrrr!

You overtake the bus behind as it could potentially be moving out to overtake the bus that's pulled over?

He's also going slower because he's slipping out behind a bike and gives them plenty of room. It's hard to tell distances but he looks like he's starting to make the manouvre quite a way from you and slips behind the bike because the bus hasn't made a move. Yes he misjudged your speed, but I don't think many people have lots of experience of cyclists going at a reasonable speed in the middle.

Personally I think you over-react in that situation quite a lot, there wasn't much point in him speeding up afterwards as it was already a red light? If I was driving that would be the kind of situation I courteously slow down/stop to let people out of a sidejunction anyway.

i had a guy pull out on me in exactly the same way when i was on my weekend ride last week, only this was going through a quiet village and the road was empty. even a woman on the pavement let out a gasp.

all you can do is expect this kind of thing and be ready for it

When I was a learner motorcyclist I did get stopped by an oncoming motorbike cop for just that kind of move...so it does happen or did, those were the days before fixed penalties. Still, your move appeared safe to me.

Yeah obviously it must be for the reason of every now and again it isn't safe.
