I heard about this briefly last night whilst watching the news. Such a terrible waste of life.

The brief clip I saw showed a very narrow road and a mangled bike, my heart sunk.

RIP.

I have always held the opinion that tipper drivers are amongst the most selfish of roadusers. Sure, they passed a comprehensive test to enable them to drive these huge vehicles but once they are out on their own, with bonuses for each load to be earned, it seems to me that every other road user is eyed as a potential obstruction to the earning capacity of the driver. There should be a strict limit on which roads these vehicles can go. London backstreets are not designed for any sort of HGV. I hate tippers, always have-always will, so I keep well clear as much as I can.

RIP

A problem here is with the economics of being a tipper driver. Most are self employed and are paid by the load. Therefore they are under pressure to drive quickly between jobs and sometimes to run over loaded to maximise their profit. 8 axled tipper trucks are very high with quite a wide turn circle and therefore have lots of blind spots. Basically they're just not suited to urban environments and the law needs changing. many drivers of tippers possibly are reckless, but they do have some mitigating circumstances. Not that I'd be so pragmatic if one of my friends had been run down by one.

Given that a huge % of cycling deaths in london are at the wheels of these vehicles, something needs to be done right now.

Having been on the tail end of the police trying to sort this out. They are going for the approach of we teach the cyclists.. I sat in one of these tipper trucks not even 3 weeks ago. And the visibility was perfect all around the truck (thats due to near 10 mirros which not all are fitted with). I think this action is incorrect as the cyclist can't always do something to get out of the way.

Back on the subject directly. RIP fellow cyclist.

Female cyclist killed by lorry this morning in Hackney

And so the carnage continues. See:

Also disgusted by the Standard article on yesterday's death, mentions the fact that the cyclists wasn't wearing a helmet. As if that would have made the slightest difference FFS!:birthday:
