Always very sad to hear.

I use that road a lot. Not sure of the cause of this accident, but many vehicles travel at speed along here. Quite a few HGVs as well. I have a few close passes by car transporters from the Nissan plant.

And once again "when he collided with a car"...

What is wrong with that? It is a non blame attributing statement - far better to avoid prejudicing any potential proceedings.

The report is not saying cyclist is to blame, not is it saying driver is to blame.

Worefer the paper to say the driver was to blame and then find at a subsequent trial the case is halted as the court rule the driver caannot get a fair trial owing to prejudicial material published in the media? Don't say this won't happen as it has on many occassions. I have succeeded with this argument on behalf of clients in cases in the past.

If that's really the case, Spen, then why doesn't it say "when the car collided with him"?

Whether you believe it or not, it is the case.

There is no question of the cyclist being prosecuted, so its safer to say it that way round!

Safer?

Do you really think the mejia give a monkey's about the safety of a possible , sometime in the future , maybe court case? Not when they can reach for their book of 1001 tired hackneyed shorthand phrases that they don't have to think about?

Safer for the paper to avoid risk of contempt of court proceedings by ensuring it does not run risk of falling foul of the law

Safer can mean other than just road safety

And how exactly does that work when the cyclist survives and the mejia still use the book of 1001 tired hackneyed shorthand phrases that they don't have to think about with "when he collided with a car"?

YOU might think it's something to do with possible contempt of court, the rest of the world knows it's just lazy journalsim.

I remember (back in Australia) a 21 year old football star got drunk (on the free drinks at a club) and drove (the sports car he'd been given as part of his contract) straight into the back of a truck and was decapitated. The press consistently used the passive voice: "he died when his vehicle collided with a parked truck".

It's easy to phrase it without pointing blame to anyone, even when that would have value as a lesson to others.
