Someone mentioned a couple in a recent thread, but I thought I'd ask specifically.

Reason being, 10years or so ago I was just about conversational, but it's long dead and I'd like to revive what little I have for a trip to Belgium next month.

Ideally I want a music station along the lines of Radio 2 or 6. But happy to give anything a go as long as it's not the crap they play on radio 1! Chanson or ye-ye would be a bonus!

Yes, 'google is your friend', but it tends to bring up long lists of stations without much info on the content. Any suggestions?

Sounds like Nostalgie will be your thing. A quick scan across the fm band anywhere in France and a lot of Belgium and you'll soon find it.

For more up to date stuff there's always NRJ

In Belgium I quite like Joe fm. A bit more rock on there. It's in Flemish though.

I'm not sure if listening to music is the most effective way to improve your French, but a few years ago I spent a lot of time listening to Europe1 and France Inter to maintain/consolidate/refresh what I'd learnt to great effect - both pretty mainstream and mostly conversational but they do occasionally play music too.

Studio Brussel is good, although Flemish, so not really on- spec.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
There's quite a lot of chanson in the Jacques Brel sense on France Classique, which is our station of choice in a hire car in France.

Okay thanks all, that's perfect - I have my work cut out. I'll give some of these a try tonight.

I'm learning French and find listening to French radio doesn't really help at all. News in Slow French is good, but the best thing I've found for learning is Coffee Break French (free podcasts, you can download them from itunes).

Agree on the Studio Brussel comment though, it's a great radio station.

I'll admit - it is prevaricating, rather than getting down to learning properly - and for the most part the conversation is too fast. That said, I've found it handy for refreshing the vocabulary and reminding me of some stock phrases. I'll give Studio Brussels a go, we'll be in Bruge a while too, need to at least buy a beer in Flemish.
