Just wondering what CC's favourite Christmas carols are. Do you folks like the traditional, well-known or more obscure? Or carols from other countries?

Three of my favourites are:

Gaudete
Jesus Christ the Apple Tree
Patrzcie Bracia Jeno

Praise ye the Lord
In the Bleak Mid Winter - Harold Darke version.
Least favourite - the First Nowell
Currently watching ITV Carol service with my lad playing trumpet! Watching it with him - we all laughing as he has just had a massive close up!

Silent Night, it stopped a war. And owes it's origin to a church mouse.
Unable to find the version I want

Silent Night - Cormac McConnell
He's down to earth and will stop to talk.

Daughter's singing that, with the Cathedral Choir this morning, I'm not sure if it's the choral version, or more like Steeleye Span?

I'll throw this one into the offerings
30 years old this year, & off a cracking LP, which is probably better known for the title track?
Steve Earle & The Dukes 'Copperhead Road'

It was also wrote by Steve
Listen to it all the way through, even this old Grinch think's it's good!!

O Little Town of Bethlehem
Hark the Herald Angels Sing

Grimpeur des terrains plats
At school we had ...

We three kings of Willerby Square
Selling knickers tuppence a pair
How fantastic, no elastic ever so hard to wear ...

The teachers never seemed that impressed

Smash the cistern
At school we had ...

Selling knickers tuppence a pair
How fantastic, no elastic ever so hard to wear ...

The teachers never seemed that impressed
We three kings of Orient are
One in a taxi, one in a car
One on a scooter, beeping his hooter
Following yonder star

Oh star of wonder, star of night
Sit on a box of dynamite
Light the fuse and off we go
Round the world to Mexico

But I do have a soft spot for Hark the herald angels sing.

It's a bit more complicated than that...
Too many verses. Always terrified of losing count and starting another verse after the singers have stopped
As always, the trick is either to know what the final verse is ("all glory be to God on high") or else having the words in front of you.

For a real brainbender, try playing from a choir book when the congregation are using a hymnbook with the verses in a different order, or even with different verses. Last night I had to spread two copies of the carol book plus a words hymnbook in front of me, twice.

I also had to play "It came upon the midnight clear", which is just about the only traditional Christmas hymn that still gets to me after 30-something years as a hard-bitten organist.

Good King Wenceslas - not only a rousing tune, but it was my dad's favourite so it brings back happy memories. Plus it's got the line about pizza in it.

Once in Royal David's City - we did this at school (a long time ago) and it's stayed with me since. And it's about another Dave.
