Not the erotic novel by Erica Jong, but an actual mindset/state that prevents a lot of people from getting to America in anything less than 3 weeks on a stinky fishing cobble.

Do you have it, have you had it, are you cured, do you want help?

Discuss (the fear of flying, not the erotic novel)

Back to OP.

No.

Got a bit nervous some years back as not flown for some time, but 6 trips in a year (leisure - including a trip to Dublin for Le Tour) sorted it again.

We had some bint complaining about our young kids wiggling in their seats (on a major family tour operator's flight - i.e. 50% kids on the plane)....anyway could tell she was nervous, so as the plane was flying, made the point of pointing out the wings wobbling and explaining air pockets to my son......;) in ear shot of the miserable bugger.....:evil::thumbsup::evil::biggrin::evil:

Ok, hand on heart now. Probably get shot down as being a twat.

If you haven't had a fear of flying, lovely... this is what it is like... My experience.

In the 90s it was ok to go away with your mates and get pissed on the flight, bottle of Vod on the flight.

That covered up the fear.
When coming home from a certain island (the plane shook as it took off). Also turblulance by a storm. My mate crashed but I saw the lightning, turburlance etc.

It went on from then. I can't get on a plane without valium ;) Yes and then I still get upset.

I would love to go on holiday with my partner but we can't because of this fear.

I found I was ok with flying, but only really became confident in flying when I started jumping out of planes. I then learnt to fly gliders and that is as pure a form of flying as you can get.

Fear of flying must be horrible for people, as it really restricts their freedom to experience some things.

Not personally scared..i love every minute of it, but ive seen the effect it has on some.
My sister in law is terrified. We finally encouraged them to come on holiday with us and she spent the entire flight with a book two inches from her face. She said later she just kept reading the same line over and over.

Saw i guy cuddling his wife in the departure lounge once. I thought he was comforting his wife who was scared. No, it was her comforting him. He looked petrified, almost panic breathing. I really felt for him

Snapper I can appreciate it, I hate roller coasters....

Bikes are FAR more dangerous...FACT (where is Joe ?)....

I'm also not to fond of heights - nothing too bad....

As I mentioned in the other thread, for me height ceases to be a problem once we are high enough to lose sense of scale. My reading about thrust etc keeps me convinced we should stay airborne after that. I had to force myself to fly 7 years ago for the first time at age 45 to take my boys on holiday with us, before they were all too old. I still brace myself for take-offs and landings and look in amazement at other passengers who are calmly reading their newspapers. I won't ever get to really enjoy it but I have overcome my decades of fear of the unknown.

Never been an issue for me. Spent several years flying all over the world as part of my job, and the main problem was overcomming the boredom.

My better half however is a complete nervous wreck anywhere near an airport. We flew to Paris a couple of years ago, and I still have the scars on my shoulder where she bit me in shear terror when the plain took off.

Can't remember the exact figure but it's something like: you have a 1 in 40,000 chance of having a car crash and a 1 in 30 million chance of having a plane crash and even then you've a 50/50 chance of surviving.

The most dangerous part of your trip is the bit from the holiday airport to the hotel.
