That's understandable. On a rather wimpier note, and it's not a phobia so much as a slight unease, I don't like walking too close to a kerb, because once I start thinking about it, I'm convinced I'm going to go too close to the edge and go over on my ankle. It's the daftest thing, but once it pops into my mind, I'll always end up walking on the other side of the pavement.

I remember they pointed out on QI once that a phobia is technically an irrational fear. Fear of deadly things, spiders (ok, not deadly here, but plenty are around the world), snakes, etc, or dangerous situations - heights etc are really quite rational, if you trace them back. Flying is hardly a natural state for humans, so no matter how much you understand the principle, the fear is fairly rational.

Absolutely terrified of the idea of planes, never been on one in anger and get a cold sweat going onto the grounded concordes etc.

I've no idea what it is, I've been in hot air balloons and a short helicopter hop without so much as a murmour.

I hate rollercoasters too - I can't even watch the passengers eye view of the stock footage of the Big One at Blackpool where it goes over the top and you can only see sea without heaving.

I'm not claustrophobic and have no fear of heights.

its absolutely irrational but is a real physical dread.

I'm not a fan at all - used to fly up to Scotland on a monthly basis but fortunately work seems to have abandoned that for the time being.

When I went to Argentina (brag mode) we made about 6 or 7 flights and each time when the plane landed the passengers all applauded - not sure if it was relief at still being alive or what, we liked it anyway and joined in.

Anyone else had that in South America?

pretty bad. 1000 people a year die as a result of falls on stairs, and spirals have the worst record. Winders at turns aren't clever, either.

Yes had some pretty 'hilarious' experiences on planes in south america. One is that we were ushered onto the wrong plane at Buenos Airies airport to go to LaPaz in Bolivia, another is that then it turned out to be the world's crappest plane, with the intro tape playing backwards, about 6" leg room and all sorts; then got terrible food poisoning on another; and were constantly shocked that the stewardesses were forced to wear inappropriately tight and short skirts...and yes everyone clapped when they landed.

Had that first time I flew to USA. I assumed it was a 'Mercan tradition. Didn't happen any other time I went there (about 5 in all) , so perhaps I missed something the first time :biggrin:

Yep. Scared rigid of flying. Had a total wobble at Gatwick on a planned trip to LA and started panicking. Needless to say didn't get on the plane. Have been a non-flyer since (though have been around much of Europe via other means).

I know the facts of flying inside out (all the safety stuff etc) but still have a massive fear of it.

It's a real shame as I spend three times as much to go five times as slow and a tenth of the distance with rail/ferries/etc.

Flying tomorrow and using a spiral staircase and expecting applause when we land at our final destination!
1000 miles in a 737-300 Jet to Riga.
200 miles in a Fokker 50 turboprop to Kaliningrad.
There's always applause when we land in Kaliningrad, it's tradition, because they are so proud of their city they are always pleased to be home.
At the Hotel I will probably negotiate the spiral staircase to the bar...
