I am a final year Product Design Engineering student at Queen’s University Belfast. For my final year project I am aiming to develop a device to enable a person with a congenital limb impairment to cycle more effectively. I am keen to obtain your feedback to guide and validate the proposed design concepts in order to produce a suitable prototype. Feedback from all types of cycling enthusiasts is welcome and encouraged.

I'm an old cyclist, with plenty of years behind me, but I dont feel qualified to answer some of your questions.

But I do have a few comments.
- the rider could adapt to fixed gear riding, taking away the necessity for two gears
- your diagrams appear to be using cable brakes? It would be better to base the solution on hydraulic disc brakes. Cars have one pedal, operating on all 4 wheels. Couldn't such a system be adapted for a bike, such that one lever operates two brakes?
- a front brake and a coaster brake does already provide a solution. The coaster brake being a back pedalling brake working on the rear wheel.

I do know of one rider that has both levers operated by the same hand. He is a very talented rider and may have qualified for the para olympics. Try contacting the Woolwich CC and ask if they could advise.

Good luck with your studies

Edit: dual pull levers already exist

I had similar on my tandem trike, with one lever operating rim brakes on both the rear wheels.
