Feeling chuffed

The chuffed-ness comes from an average of just over 12mph on an 18-mile spin I've just done, mostly level roads but with a few 'undulations'.

Small beer, most people will say. Well for me, I can only say that it used to be my average of about 4 or 5 years ago, since then sadly in decline. I rarely surpass 10mph these days.

It's all relative. For me, an oldie in declining health, 12mph feels as good as - say - 18mph in a younger, fitter, cyclist.

I'm a middle aged newbie who never was, far less used to be

If 12mph means something to you, then you're quite right to be chuffed.
If I get out on the bike at all, I'm chuffed and have just done so.

So, consider me as having just clinked glasses with you.
Well done !

Well done, Pete. I'm 31 and have yet to achieve 12mph average on a long run, so "go you"!

Thanks guys. I was never fast, I don't know how much my average was in my younger days seeing as there were no computers in those days (well, there was a sort of cable-driven 'speedo' - ghastly thing). But I used to be able to just keep up with a roadie club when they were on a 'leisure' run - but not when they were on a 'training' run....

I'm 61, I should have said. But I expect a few more cycling years, if I am spared..

Well done Pete. I know it feels good to achieve what is good for you. The other day I just couldn't be bothered, but since then I have done two rides, one a 20 and today a 30miler at 13.1mph average on a fairly hilly (for Essex!) circuit. I am approaching 64, weigh a tad over 18 stone and ride a 20 year old Raleigh road bike.

Good is what's good for you, not what anyone else considers.

Well done from another oldie, the big 60 this year, with a chest full of medical hardware. Just keep pedalling and enjoying it, thats the important thing.
