There is a lot of love for the Cannondale name and the factory that makes them isn't bad at all.

I have owned Cannondales and visited the factory.

Lack of tapered head tube
External cable routing
Very plain roundish tubes

I won't count the 6061 as many brands still use it, as that is often an economical / capability issue for the brand / factory.

Equally, the alloy / carbon fork could just be an economic decision.

But within the context of the thread ie absolute Newbie wishing to buy first bike and hasn't got a clue - are any of those 'deficiencies' a good reason not to buy a CAAD8?

There's nothing you've said there that makes the CAAD8 'outdated'. It's their cheapest road bike frame, designed to compete with the likes of the Specialized Allez, Scott Speedster, Giant Defy etc etc. They're all decent bikes with much the same spec and features. You sure you haven't got a bone to pick with Cannondale?

No issue with Cannondale.

My Raven Super V was a true innovation.

Somebody had said spend money on the best frame you can and I was suggesting better was out there

i was surprised at the level of sentiment that Cannondale make the best frames in the world.

Simple as that

So in your opinion, who does make some of the best Alu frames you can buy?

I don't think you'd be disappointed with either bike. The real problem is the price point which starts to get you beyond the cheap carbon threshold into the more decent stuff, and so very fine steel machines.
