Fences facing inwards

The way has always been that when you put up a fence, the "good" side faces outwards towards the road.

Now around our way I have seen three new fences going up facing inwards with all the post and rails facing the road.

Is this just a trend? Common sense? or rather mean and a reflection of the rather selfish attitude that now seems to prevail?

The new fence looks wrong, and is harder to train plants up and easier to climb over from the outside.

It's weird. I can't think why. Maybe it's because it's wrong! With a proper fence, you see the supports, it's like you're on the 'inside' and the fence is separating you from the outside. Having it the wrong way around doesn't feel like it would be as 'secure' for the owners. It's like the world has been fenced off from them, rather than them fencing the world away. Doing it the right way also maximises the area enclosed.

But you're probably right - the owners probably think that they should see the 'neat' side because they've paid for it.

They also need planning approval to put up a fence or wall higher than 1m on the Highway boundary.... the planners would normally insist on the finished fence boards facing outwards if they allow it under a retrospective approval, so they may require the owners to fix extra boards to the rails on the outside, either that or take the inner boards off and re-fix them on the outside... maybe worth a quiet word with your Council's Area Development Control Officer in the Planning Department...

I was always taught that the arris rails of your fence always face into your property, and the flat side of the fence faces out.

Technically, no fence in Basingstoke has a 'good side'.
