Yup, that's right, F&T got taken over mid-2008 by Sports"whatever it is" (World? Direct?), whichever is Mike Ashley's bunch. There have been a few shop closures since then, with some moving in to the local Sports"whichever" shop (e.g. in Cambridge), and the shops that do remain have stopped stocking some lines/brands.

He also bought Karrimor as part of that deal, hence why Karrimor kit is sold in Soprts Direct, and why the overall quaility of Karrimor kit has declined drastically.
