I've been filming my longer rides for a bit less than a year now since I got my Cycliq camera. The intention was mainly to gather a nice pic or 2 from each ride rather than to police close passers. And for info gathering if I have an accident.

I haven't had an accident. I haven't had any passes close enough to warrant reviewing the footage  I have found the footage of my rides, which I expected to be cool and picturesque to actually be a really dull succession of lanes and hedges. I really struggle to get one or two interesting stills to add to my ride uploads.

Thanks for that. I've been teetering on the edge about buying a bike camera.
But, I reasoned that my day to say is pretty mundane and that would be what shone through any video I took on rides.

Just as another idea, if you're prepared to do lots of stopping & starting, a drone can add a different perspective. Here's my latest effort... I think if I used helmet-mounted video footage too, that would give even more interest & options, or even just a few hand-held snippets from the normal camera (the second video was handheld, and now I'm getting to grip with Windows Clipchamp, would edit out the wind noise and do some editing/crossfades).

Well any rides which are filmed will obviously just be one view usually of direction you are travelling in so not sure what else you'd expect to have to be honest. Aside from submitting footage of close passes etc which is probably what majority have a camera for, it can be handy to make edits of a particular scenic bit of a ride and take snapshots from video footage. I've done that of wildlife I've filmed as I've gone down a quiet lane etc. My GoPro is attached to bike but that also gives me to option during a stop to wander around and film anything interesting.

I've got some nice shots of foxes and deer with my Cycliq camera. Not great quality bit nice keepsakes. And if the weather is particularly ... interesting ... I've got interesting footage of puddles and so on. And as you say, you can always take the camera off the bike and use it as a camera if you want.

And if you go somewhere spectacular then the footage is correspondingly spectacular. Like the Tourmalet earlier this month. ;)

Although, to be fair, the same stretch of road looks pretty cool on Streetview too.

I want a drone that will follow and film all of my rides, and if I push a button on the bars it will tag the nearest vehicle to me and do one or more of the following (selectable):
  • Automatically upload to Op Snap
  • Fly close to the side window to get identifying footage of their face.
  • Hail them with a deafening loudspeaker that they are the worst kind of slime, their mothers would be ashamed and their actions have been reported and also will be shared with their employer and family.
  • Follow the miscreant to their destination, continually doing the above public announcement to underline the error of their ways, and when they get out buzz them close until they run for safety.
  • Shoot out their tyres and/or shut down their vehicle with an EMP burst.
It could also go get help if I'm in an accident, go fetch something I've forgotten, or fetch me a coffee from the nearest emporium

At the moment I'm settling for a Cycliq light/camera, but wouldn't mind a rear facing one as well.

I've made a couple of short videos of special rides (Tourmalet, riding a TdF stage ahead of the race) recently, using Cycliq footage plus some stills. These were worth doing as the footage was a bit more interesting than streetview.

I used MS Clipchamp and I found it a real grind, possibly because my laptop is underpowered. Anyway I had increased respect for those influencers who churn out YouTube videos. It's quite hard to make something that isn't utter crap.
