Here for rides.
Day off tomorrow (birthday present to myself) and I fancy a trip to the smoke with tlh. Intent is to climb the monument, take lunch in Zedels, see the lights on Oxford St. I quite fancy a museum or a gallery but which one? Sir John Soanes appeals, as does the Horniman though it is a way out of central

What else should we try to pack in? What's a hit and what's a miss in December 2017?

I love visiting Greenwich Observatory - really interesting. The park is lovely and the food stalls in Greenwich market are great too.

There's an imprsssionist exhibition on at the Tate if that's your thing

Carnaby and Regent streets also have good lights if you're that way

Christmas market thingy on the south bank if you're looking for Gluhwein

Going up and down the stairs in the monument gave me the willies. Passing other people can be tricky.
But the view from the top is good.
Try to book a trip up the walkie talkie, to the sky garden it is free but you need to book in advance.

In one day you won't be able to see much as you'll spend lots of time moving around on the tube. Did you know that you don't need to buy a ticket now? Just touch your payment card at the turnstile on entering and leaving and it sorts out your fares, capped at £6.60 a day.

If you fancy a museum the Greenwich Maritime Museum is fantastic.

For me no day out in London is complete without lunch or dinner at Maroush Express, on the east side of Edgware Road about 200 yards up from Marble Arch. The best Lebanese food in London.

What's that got to do with sightseeing in central London?
I'll hazard a guess that @GrumpyGregry is going to get the train from Horsham and then use public transport

Good point, for me it would be Greenwich.

But only do it at rush hour times otherwise you don't get the full effect of the ignorance & contempt that you will be treat with if you dare to pause for even a millisecond to get your bearings.

Free pass to the Sky Garden hanging around my neck as I type, by virtue of who I work for. Just have to sweet talk the lift attendants. Been a few times, nice view but don't like the place tbh.

and it means stepping onto work premises on my birthday...
