Just saw two fire men on bikes, all kitted out with panniers and fire printed all over the bike and helmets. what have they got in their panniers, a hose?

They can get there quicker and access the situation I believe. Then pass that information back to the crew so they know what to expect.

Along with getting cats out trees without the need for a full fire fighter force

I think you will find that those things you mention are already being done. This is just another way to reduce fires, which has to be a good thing, dont you agree?
Every fire that is prevented is potentially a life saved, and of course a financial saving. Unless your happy seeing your taxes going up in smoke, and higher insurance premiums.

Absolutely, it was the fact that they need to do it that prompted the eye rolling.

indeed, avoiding the fire engine being called out for no real reason just 10 times a year is most likely a huge saving.

Someone worked it out at a cost of £350 per appliance just to attend. Not sure where all the figures came from, but I suppose theres someone somewhere who works out these things.

Excellent to see that the fire brigade have caught up with the police and paramedics on this one. Bikes are an excellent way to patrol, or get to places within a small area quickly.

Now, it just remains for the coastguard to get some pedaloes....

Here in Suffolk there are a couple of firefighters who patrol the heathland around Ipswich on mtbs to engage with the children who might be tempted to start fires. Both are fully trained mtb instructors, and the idea is that they will eventually run courses for the disaffected yoofs.
