Once you factor in the walk to and from the station and the waiting for the train, it takes the same time to do my 12 mile commute by bike as it did by train. No one at work believes me, but it does.

I knock 20 minutes off my time into town by cycling rather than walking into the village and getting the bus - more if I go along the main road, but it's flat and dull in comparison to the back roads.

I pace myself according to the road itself. Flat out along the main road until I can turn off into the village, then nice and steady up the hills, build up momentum along the straight so I can fly down the long hill and have the momentum for the next set of climbs. It's up / down / up for several miles, then a long stretch of flat where I chill out and annoy the BMW t*ssers before weighing up a slow but smooth or fast n bumpy ride down the hill into town (bloomin potholes), then it's thighs at the ready for arguing with cars about my right to be in the lanes I want to use - and getting away from the traffic lights.
