After three punctures in a week (and it was raining again) I decided sod it, leave the racer at home and take my off-road hybrid with the thick knobbly tyres for the first time.
It was surprisingly enjoyable. Which is to say, much better than I'd been expecting. I'm so used to whizzing along, I'd been expecting it to be a lot more sluggish. But while it did undoubtedly take the edge off - and I certainly wouldn't consider making it my full-time #1 for that reason alone - it was a lot zingier than I'd expected. Main downside was that having used only downtube shifters for 40 years, the handlebar ones just aren't intuitive. I have to think 'now which way is up/down'? every time I shift, which is a drag.
But overall, much better than I expected. Like I say tho', soon as the weather improves I do look forward to getting back on my 'real' bike.
