Also, is there a correct or good angle for the rear mech to be situated?

Assuming you are replacing the hanger like with like all you need to do is to ensure the mech's B screw is free to engage the flat on the hanger as you install the rear mech. Essentially the B screw determines the angle (and more specifically the clearance between the top jockey wheel and the largest rear cog).
