First fall of the winter

It was bound to happen sooner or later.

I was cycling in the college grounds just coming up to my building. The road bends sharply to the right and then up a slight gradient.
I was coming up to this bend and the car in front was pulling away a little. So I decided to speed up a little. I then realised that I was going into the turn too fast (as I knew it was icy) so just touched the front brake a little.

As soon as I knew it, I was on the ground, sliding whilst watching my bike appear next to me.
The guy behind was very helpful and asked if I needed help. I quickly jumped up (didnt feel the fall) and told him I was okay and that "it was going to happen at some point".
I then realised that my friend was a few cars back and (didnt see) realised what had happened.

I was in a happy mood and laughing about it until I looked at the damage to the bike.
The front mudguard had snapped at both stays (Crud racer plastic thing) and my bar end plug had popped out. I also have a little scrape on my panniers which will probably go with a sponge.
I did a little DIY job with the mudguard after an exam with some tape that I had for just an occasion.

Things I have learnt: When you have manage to cycle the 15.9 miles to college, dont fall over in the last 0.1 mile.
Dont fall over in the college grounds when there are security cameras and people you know about.
Dont touch the front brake on what looks like ice.
Dont go too fast and think you are invincible.

Ooch.

College grounds are always a bit dicey - tricky for the staff to grit the lot.

Was the metal drain cover the culprit? Doesn't look icy.

I could have been worse, you might have been on your new bike!
No, I avoided the drain and the paint but it was just some black ice that caused the problem. Cars were okay as they are heavy, it must have just been my thin tires.

Yes, I am glad that I wasnt on the new bike. I would have been mighty peeved if I had been.

If only you had read my friendly warning posted to you at 00.25 on another thread:sad:.
Never mind, no real damage and another lesson learned. How did the exam go?

There was some ice on the grass you passed, which might have given you a clue.

However, black ice on the road is by definition all but invisible, so I expect many riders would have literally fallen for it.

Yes I saw that! Thank you for putting the impending fall on me.

The exam went better than perfect. We happened to go through the exact paper last week with the tutor who said that "we will have the same paper but different figures (maths paper). Strangely though we had the exact same paper (literally nothing changed).
We all came out of the room looking at each other and making sarcastic comments. I wouldnt be surprised if everyone got very high marks and was accused of cheating!

Must say the road looked rather glossy, which is a good indication of ice.

Don't worry I've already had two offs, one face plant in mud, and another, again off road, when the bike went its own way on snow, I jumped off. No injuries as soft landing.
