Almost made it through the year without a single fall since taking up cycle commute back in April/May. Cycled in to work every day I've had a bike available (two weeks between it getting nicked and insurance sorting out replacement aside), but on Saturday afternoon was making a quick trip to Dales to spend £50 of vouchers in their sale...

Cycled along the canal path then down a long, frost covered grass slope. Joined a cyclepath at the bottom and was doing a decent speed downhill when I noticed a (small) branch in my path. Not intending on avoiding it I noticed at the last minute that it was covered in massive thorns and thought a quick swerve might save the tyres. Not a good plan with my recently frost covered tyres. Quick wobble then straight down, jacket sleeve wrecked (£50 jacket, so broke even with the vouchers!) along with my elbow, hip and the top of my thigh. Nice distressed look on my jeans too!

Elbow's agony and savlons dry spray with iodine stings more than I was expecting (although I wasn't exptecing iodine!)

As an aside, the guy in Dales was great - I went in to get a poly bag to stick some gear in (Topeak pannier bag was jammed on its frame) and he came out to check over the bike and offered me chance to get cleaned up, etc.

Bike just needed the handlebars and wheel realigned so did it my self and cycled slowly home.

Anyway, moral of the story - take the risk on the wee thorns, your elbow takes longer to fix than your tyre!

(edited to make a bit more sense)

Two falls in 2008,one at Aldgate and one at Southwark Bridge. One mile commute left and leisure cycling in the next two day.So long as there are BMW's about I wont count my chickens ;-)

Use some of the really sticky duct tape on the holes of your coat - it will work as a short fix. I have a hole in my right shoulder of my nightvision from my off this year and intend to duct tape that, lol!

Don't bank on that pal!

learn to bunny hop

grrrrrr. had this exact statement from a non-cycling colleague today who wouldn't accept that my no-suspension-hybrid was doing no bunny hopping with a foot's notice of what was about to cross its path!

Yes I get crap from work colleagues as well.Think they are funny, like I haven't heard it all before.Doh.

I got asked if I stopped at traffic signals today.(Again)

hm. maybe my low post count makes me look like an easy troll target. although i reckon this could be my first thread on the first website ever made and lee would be an obvious troll!

Oh yeah I forgot lee was on the windup again.Sorry it's been a bit knackering dodging BMW's all day.Mysteriously they were absent on my ride back.Perhaps they were in hiding or it was past their bedtime.

Ouch - I remember the pain of that spray-on stuff. I was screaming in a soprano voice for a while afterwards !!

Hope you heal quickly and don't come across many twigs. And ignore Lee - he lacks the gentle approach when he thinks you're not up to his superhuman standards... Sometimes I wonder if he and Bonj are related - tact and diplomacy are not their forte.
