First off on the new bike today, hit a patch of black ice on a shared use path wasn't going that fast about 8mph, cracked my knee a sore one but i was in more of a state about the bike only had it about 2 weeks, on the plus side i did manage to get 25 miles in after work as it was such a great day, btw thanks to the motorist on the A80 who tooted his horn and shouted ****** at me as i was getting up.

Ouch Jim, I hope your and the bikes injuries aren't too bad. And some people wonder why I like to stay away from paths at this time of year.

Personally I like to stay away from paths at all times of the year. I know some people like them, and I know why they like them... but personally I don't see the need to be on them in the vast majority of cases.

Much more importantly... Ouch, Jim! Hope your knee is OK. And don't worry about the moton who honked you. He has no friends, he's about to be made redundant and his wife is sleeping around because he just doesn't satisfy her.

Who cares if that isn't true. No-one can prove I'm wrong.

I had my first off a couple of weeks back - which surprised me cos let's face it it's quite hard to fall off a bike! (Unless you are one of those who admit to riding into kerbs, parked cars etc  ). Was only do around 13-14mph but was too fast for a wet corner with plenty of white lines. Lovely slide across the road on my hip (obviously my head did not hit anything ;)) and was grateful to the car behind who took great care getting around me as quickly as possible whilst I unclipped and got out of his way!!!

Bad luck Jim, hope the bruises are quickly gone. As for the bike I know how you feel but in the end they are also pretty tough so should be OK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ps. Black Ice - I hate it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, it had to happen. I just had my first off of the year, too! On a shared-use path during a Sunday pleasure-ride. MOST of the snow and ice was gone, but I managed to find a patch of ice full of frozen footprints. I was on the 'bent, so I didn't have the studded tyres that I've been using on my safety bike most of this winter. Started through the ice, and thought, "Oh, I think I can make it." BOOM! Nice thing about the 'bent, is you don't have too far to fall! ;-) One little scrape on my elbow, and no damage to my bike. Gorgeous weather that day, though, and all the ice was gone by the time I rode home.
