Sounds awful - Really feel sorry for you. Don't worry too much though. As has already been said, take the recovery slowly. It'll be fine.

Incidently, if it helps ease your mind, a freind of mine had a very nasty motorcycle accident year before last and wrecked his wrist. He was told that in the unlikely event he ever managed to ride a motorbike again, it would definitely not be a sports bike.

However, he was very meticulous about doing all the wrist exercises his physio gave him, and while he still gets a little bit of pain now and then, he's back on his Honda Fireblade. He's also taken up cycling and is fine with the dropped bars on his racer.

I think they tend to give you "worst case" scenario. As you recover though, just don't overdo it and put yourself back a stage - that's what can do more damage.

So basically, don't go selling your bike off just yet. It's amazing just how resiliant the human body is.

Your future cycling plans may be determined by your patience and physio commitment. :hugs:for you.

GWS !
With regards to long term recovery and fitness have you considered with the doctors consent a turbo /exercise bike once the joint is stable enough? that way you could get some base fitness training whilst not overloading the joint .
If you really want to get back on the road but feel a normal bike is beyond you maybe look into recumbents , there is always a way !

Hi guys, I can confirm that i did come off on the L/H corner on Kingston Hill Corfe. Oh it all comes back to me. In hinesight i probable should have just ridden straight into the hedge rather than try and take the corner. I'm thankfull that no vehicle(s) were travelling comming the other way.

thanks again for your messages of support.

My god, there but the grace of god!

Best wishes in your recovery. Fractured my humerus head in 3 places in a collision last August so can empathise with your pain. As others have said the real work begins after the post-op recovery. I didn't have one because there was nothing displaced and I didn't dislocate it either. You will need pretty extensive physio and in my experience recovery is not quick. You may end up like me with a frozen shoulder, but that will improve in time with exercise recommended by your physio if it does happen. I was on my turbo inside three weeks of the accident (one handed/no handed of course). Within 10 weeks was able to use the turbo pretty much normally and bear the weight of having my hands on the bars. (all positions) Tops, before drops and finally hoods because of the extra stretch and lean forwards. As yet however, I have not ventured back onto the road. mind you that could all change this afternoon. good luck hope it works out OK for you.

Thank you all for your messages of support, it really means a lot. Currently on morphine for the pain so pretty out of it between bouts of sleeping. Thanks for the positive messages giving me hope and encouragement.
All the best for the operation Cocheese and look forward to hearing of your recovery via CC over the coming weeks.

Thanks for all the kind messagesand positive vibes. I had the stapples out on Monday this week and also saw the x rays for the first time. 13 screws and 1 plate later I am back together again. Start my physion next week then back to the hospital for a further x ray and examination to see how things are mending. I have attached a few pics for those who are inquisitive - not for the squeemish.

Thanks again !!

That's some metalwork you've got there!

I can't comment about shoulders (I now know all about ankles after breaking mine in four places!) - but from experience it will take quite a bit of time before the joint becomes fully mobile. Your orthopaedic surgeon will probably be quite guarded at this stage about the possible outcomes, as it's still very early days. One thing you will have going for you is that, being fitter than most people, it will help things heal better. It's good that you're getting physio - though be prepared for some months of exercises ahead: 8 months and I'm still doing physio exercises each day - progress may seem frustratingly slow at times, but rest assured things will improve. Just remember to do all the physio's exercises religiously. May you have a very swift recovery!

Nice and steady with the recovery mate, physios are top notch these days and hopefully it won't be too long before you can get back out on the bike.
At least you have some nice walking country around you. Just getting out in the fresh air does wonders for you.
All the best..
