The others all have steel forks and old style nutted side pull brakes. The frames will be heavy and other non-branded components of the cheapest quality. The Decathlon bike is far superior.

Another vote for the Triban 3 - Was my 1st road bike for christmas and I now cannot get out on it enough - Excellent value for money. Sturdy too as I commute with reasonably heavy panniers.

I think it's going to have to be the Decathlon then, you've sold it to me.

It is one that could be upgraded a little if/when I felt was necessary to a decent standard as opposed to buying a new one for more money?

The next question (I'll stop soon) is what size, I'm about 6'2" and my inside leg is 34-35". Obviously if I go in store I can sit and find out but if not what what you guys and girls recommend? and is the 3cm difference between 57cm and 60cm that much as I have no idea?

I'd say you'd be best taking a trip up the M3 to Reading, they have 60cm frames in stock, not the 57cm apparently.
If you buy online and it's no good, you can return under DSR but it'd be a hassle I'd say

Having just bought a bike online, it is far easier to buy in store...and you'd get it straight away ;)

Have you considered second hand bikes? I see you have one in your original post, but there are many more out there! You'll get more for your money - It's just a case of make sure it is in good nick!

Sorry didn't refresh the page before posting so I didn't see this, I have read it can often be the best bet but I have really no idea what to look for so I'm a bit uncomfortable in doing so. And just finding any in a viable area has been frustrating, but I'll keep looking before I do buy a bike just in case a corker pops up

That's fair enough. At least with a new bike you know exactly what you are getting! I looked on eBay within 50 miles of Portsmouth, and nothing jumped out at me as a particularly great deal in your rough frame size.

If you are looking at getting the Triban, I would definitely recommend going in-store to make sure you get the sizing right.

Anyone have any experience of leg trimming to fit onto smaller bikes?

I think I'll pop up to Reading someone over the next week or two so in the meantime I will just have to keep an eye out  hopefully I'll get lucky. I'm also gonna pop in a few times to my LBS and see if they have any decent second hand bikes pass through.

Stick with Decathlon... ;)

Think I'm going to have to, can't go against all these pro-Decathlon posters  just got to try and find out when they are likely to both have the 57cm and 60cm to try and hope I don't go there on false information

Cheers for all the help from everyone, I'll post when I get it and at the same time I'm sure I'll be thanking you all for advising me to get it!
