Hi there, been cycling on a Kona mountain bike on the road for 4 months. Been thinking about buying a road bike and have a chance of a Giant TCR. I tried it for a spin but found it so different from my usual bike (obviously) can anyone give me any advice ? Should I buy a second bike or stay with my wee Kona.

I changed from hybrid to road earlier this year, and the change in position takes getting used to. I would buy a second bike since they do grow on you

The change of position was really unusual I must admit, I have no idea why but I felt a bit unsure of myself. I just don't know if I would get used to it ??

I didn't either, but found riding with hands on the 'hoods' got me into it, along with spending a bit of time setting up. I've just bought a shorter stem to try once I get back on the bike as I felt a little stretched. Definitely worth going for though, surprising how much faster you can go on a lightweight, skinny tyred roadie..

I must admit, having taken the tcr for a spin, I found I felt a little stretched and out of control ... Which for a girl newbie was quite scary

The TCR is supposed to be very good. Exactly which model are you looking at?

Options if you wanted to stick with the offer could include either getting the next size down (you can always raise the seat if you need to), or getting the shop to fit a shorter handlebar stem (the horizontal bit) so that the handlebars are closer to you. A cm makes a big difference.

Hi stu,
Thanks for the advice, I'm not sure which model it is. It's yellow and black with a bit of red - all moulded frame I think.. It's quite boyish but I don't mind it looks nice. I might try to get a shorter stem as I do feel a bit stretched

The TCR is a lovely road bike as is the Defy . The TCR is for riding it like you stole it , the defy is for getting to a picnic fast but you can also ride it like you stole it .
I went for a Defy first to see if I liked road bikes . I love them so now going for a TCR . Forget the deals and offers and see if you like road bikes first .

Is it new or second hand?

Unless its under 1k then I would buy ( did buy ) a new Defy and use that as an introduction to road bikes . You can sell it on after if you want to upgrade .
PS im no expert , just someone that has gone from MTB to road bikes and loving the road bikes !
