You could get a pair of Specialized BG Tourer shoe - they come with a rubber pad fixed over the cleat holes so if you want to use them as regular shoes (permanently), you can. Otherwise, prise/tear the pads off and you've got cleated shoes that are fine to walk in.

Not all road shoes are created equal - these ones are softer so if you think you're Laura Trott, forget it. Great for general duties though, very comfy!

So should I lean towards the dual-use pedals or the mtb/city shoes?
You can get both. Shoes for clipping in. Trainers for commute or whatever you wear for work. Stilletos may not be ideal

I bought specialized Sonoma thinking they'd work as stiffer shoes on flat pedals. They didn't as no grip and I kept getting cramp on my toes when out of the saddle. They now have cleats and are fine for walking around

One of my coworkers was just telling me how great his pair is yesterday. I'll definitely consider those ones!

So the consensus is dual use pedals for commuting in trainers, but rigid road shoes for long distance use? Or should I be looking at mtb shoes for my first experience with clip-in pedals?

Are you wanting to clip in the road shoes? If so, you'll need SPD style road shoes like a Shimano R088 or two pairs of pedals - one for the trainers, one for SPD SL road shoes. You won't be able to walk far in these, and only like a duck

Cleated SPD MTB shoes are rigid too and can do long distances in those - jefmcg has used something a bit like these for all those KMs http://www.wheelies.co.uk/p55357/Shimano-WM43-SPD-womens-shoes.aspx

I suggest you go to a few shops to look at the different types of shoes and try some on - and get an understanding of the differences
