Just settled with a coffee when a one of my new colleagues says to me " have you cycled in today"
"yes" I replied
"good for you" she said "but I do think cyclists should be paying road tax" ;)

Queue my calm and reasoned re-education of this poor lady who to be fair did not know any better (she did not know that low Co2 emitting cars did not pay VED). Nor did she know that most "cycle lanes" where poorly designed and at times dangerous to use, ect. She took it well and tbh has a better appreciation of the needs of cyclists.

Job done me thinks lol.

I like that she just said it to you during a conversation, knowing you're a cyclist and so giving you both a chance to discuss it rather than bellowing it from a car window and driving off! Fair play to her that she did it that way so you could put the cyclists point of view across.

I'd also tell her...."Yes £170 a year for my car - it's sat on the drive not clogging up the roads, not polluting, and not wearing the roads out..... !"

Good on you, I'm useless at getting my point across in these situations and go away feeling frustrated so I try to avoid talking about cycling with non-cyclists!

Helmets came up in conversation the other day and 3 out of the 4 people present were convinced they were compulsary, and despite establishing that they aren't they were still quite aggressive in telling me I should always wear one!
And on getting hit from behind at a roundabout last year (slowly, in bright sunlight and most likely on purpose) the first comment I got was something along the lines of "well you should have had hiviz on"

Do you have to buy a new one of those each year?

I suppose the initial jibe may have been a wind-up just to provoke a reaction. Such things are not unknown amongst our four-wheeled friends...
