Hi all,
After finally deciding on a bike (a Ridgeback voyage) with plenty of advice from the good folks on here, I'm heading off on my first 'proper' tour tomorrow.
I know the weather's about to break but I've got to go with the dates available so hope not to get rained on too much....
so the plan is to leave Rossendale and take road route directly to Bolton and then on to Newton le Willows where I can pick up the SCARS canalside route down to the trans-pennine trail then over the Runcorn bridge and through to chester and campsite. Next day it's a (hopefully) simple route along the coast and sustrans route 5 to Bangor. Third day takes me through Anglsey via one of the sustrans routes or whichever way I fance to the ferry at Holyhead where I meet a friend in Dublin for the ride down to Cork. Details for that leg are a bit sketchy so far as the said friend is organising that part of the route. I suspect there'll be a pub or two featuring along the way though.
I'm looking froward to setting off and getting some miles done. The bike feels a bit heavy with full panniers but at about 15kg all-in including food and water I'm not too badly overloaded (I hope). There's a two man tent for the ireland leg too which adds to the weight a bit.
I've been up to Lancaster on the bike so far, covering about 50 miles a day (l took the round about route on the way back) and am pretty confident 60 miles a day is possible. I've done plenty of camping so not worried about that and looking forward to being on the road.
Will let you know how I get on....
