I have been thinking about getting one. Torn between building my own on an old steel frame or just getting a new one. I think it will help with building leg strength (I struggle when climbing) and aid fitness. Live in a pretty flat location so not many big hills around to cause an issue. Like the look of the Langster Polish but a couple of ppl (mentioning no names) said Langsters were naff!

If you like it, get it. I think it's pretty decent looking too and it's a little bit special to me as it was a test ride on one of these that was my first experience of fixed. A few hundred yards up and down outside the shop left me grinning like an idiot and I now have two fixed road bikes and ride one almost every day thanks to it.

That said it rides like any other cheapish aluminium road bike and personally I'd go for one of the steel offerings of similar cost. Don't forget that the weight difference is less important since fixed gears have so few components.

Can you recommend any?

My totally biased (because I have one) suggestion would be the Genesis Flyer (or Ridgeback Solo if you want mudguards) which I think is one of the better looking fixed gear bikes around. You might be able to find an 08 model that's a little cheaper though it'll probably cost as much or more than the Langster. Otherwise, have a look here:

Some of the links are out of date but it's a good general guide to what's on the market.
