I want to add a flashing front light to my existing setup of Ay-Ups at the front and a Cateye LD-1100 (flashing) and Smart (steady) at the back.

I've seen some cracking flashing lights coming towards me on my commute - you can see them coming a mile off and, as others have said, you can immediately tell there's a bike coming your way. Anyone recommend a reasonably-priced (sub-£20) & reasonable small-sized flashing front light?

BTW - what's with the sudden increase in weak, flashing green front lights around Edinburgh? I see more and more of these each week - surely not legal?

Tesco's are doing a special offer on lights which match that description.

I had to borrow one of those once for the ride home at 10pm as I'd stupidly forgotten to put my lights back on after the weekend.Felt totally invisible all the way home

They are probably fulfilling the legal status but they are really poor.

I don't think I'd like to try and navigate a dark country lane by flashing light. There is a difference: if it's to see by, go steady. If to be seen, you have the choice.

My brightest front LED is steady-only: it's the fairly old Cateye with five lenses (forget what it's called). But I mainly use a rechargeable set with filament bulbs: the LED is kept as reserve. Obviously you can't flash the filaments...

Clas Ohlson do a nice one* for just under £17, unfortunately, there's not one in your area.

* single white LED, steady or flash. runs off 4xAAAs

Crawled up to junction in my car this eve, looked right, turning head back *flash*. Started to go and it caught my attention so stoppped again just peeking out over line.

Turned out I would have had room to pull out completly. I confess I probably should have looked longer as view is slightly obscured. Wondering if I would have noticed it if it was steady - I try to have steady and flashing front and back when it's dark like it is now at 5.30. Maybe I just wasn't looking as well as I should as most flashes dont have very long dark periods

100m up the road cyclist had his hi-viz, but hadn't bothered to put any lights on...

Can you feel the darkness call
Let the street have their way
They'll carry you on 'til morning
And steal your soul away.

I would push the boat out to about twice that and ziplock a Fenix L2D on your lid. Rechargable AA's and a tactical strobe mode make them very good for directing old fashioned stares at the unwashed.

Tesco should be taken to task on those lights, they're sold as a pair, the front light looks like it should be white, but the leds are green and dim and quite frankly I wouldn't dare use it unless it was the only light I had.

I went and bought two little Keyring type lights , one red and one white in a pack, from Tescos and looped them through the vents in my crash helmet, Put them on yesterday and was amazed to be able the see the front white one flashing on street signs quite some distance up the road.

Much as we malign superstores myself included i have to say for only a couple of quid they worked remarkably well to top up the lights i already have, also knowing that i have a flashing light on the front of my helmet i seemed to purposefully turn my head towards any car that approached from the side .
