Hello all.

Looking at buying a flat bar road bike of a fast hybrid. So far I have come up with one of the following:
Specialised sirrus elite
Ridge back flight 02
Whyte portobello

what are people's opinions? Or suggest another similar bike in the 500 to 750 range

My opinion is you've missed out the Giant Rapid- which is my ride of choice- with road bike gearing it's 'faster' than the sirrus which came with MTB gears when i was buying a year ago (didn't check out the other two), I love mine as a nice entry to cycling and nice high visibility for commuting- although do now wish I'd bought a drop bar for hand positions on longer rides.

At the risk of being "you don't want this, you want that", I do have to ask, why not drops?

They give you a choice of hand positions (on flat bit, on hoods, or on the drops proper), and if the flat bit is around level with the saddle, or even a bit higher if you prefer an upright position, there's a lot of options.
With drops, you can tuck down out the wind, which can be demoralising on the flat if there's a headwind, quite apart from going faster. It's a mistake to regard drops as a "racing" or "lycra boys" thing - flats just mean no choice of position, and putting more effort in to go slower.

If you've a bad back or whatever, then none of the above may apply of course, and you may already have thought it through

I did use to have a drop bar road bike andenjoyed commuting. But i do suffer from back issues so long rides would cause problems.

how does the giant rapid fair up size wise? I am 6ft 1 and usually end up looking good at xl or even xxl. Is the xl big enough? Also.......rapid 2 or 3
