you have to understand how insurance works.

All standard rates basically come off a glorified spreadsheet, that's what a customer gets quoted. The new customer discount is applied based on the marketing dept. not on the actuarial costs. So it's not the guy on the end of the phone being a money grabbing bloke, it's just two separate depts.

As it happens in my last motorbike insurance discussion the person on the phone said she couldnt match the internet price of the same company so I'd be best doing it that way

I used to love the "Can't match the Internet Price"

We wanted to buy a computer for my MiL and it was a good price on the internet.

Went into store so she could try it and it was fine.

Price was nearly double the Internet price -and they could not match it

So asked to see manager, and he also stated that they could not sell store products at the internet price

Prepared for this, simply took out phone, ordered from internet and "Collect in Store" then produced the collection number.

He was not a happy little managers he had to provide me with the same computer he had refused to sell me at the internet price he couldn't match

I'm now sim only with Tesco, 6 quid a month for a crap load of minutes and data, the latter I never use, and their customer service is a refreshing change from the high pressure tactics of their rivals.

Much as I generally dislike Tesco and all they stand for, you really can't fault Tesco Mobile, either for deals or for customer service. They're consistently rated as a top performer and I can see why.
Although 'Tesco Mobile' is actually someone else providing the network and everything else to then under a white label deal - O2, according to Wiki...which is odd when you consider the slating O2 get for their own network.

I pay four pound a month for a load of free calls, texts and Data from ID mobile on a Sim only deal. All more than I will ever use. Seem very efficient. I think they are part of Carphone Warehouse. I had a Tesco deal but they were unable to unlock my Tesco mobile even though they gave me unlock codes which did not work. Gave up on them.

No, that can't be right. I isn't a subsidy if no payment goes to the person paying less.

That's true. But Insurance companies need a certain amount of profit to sustain their operations. Were there no "stickers" paying over the odds for their insurance the insurance companies couldn't afford to offer such low prices to new customers. No direct subsidy as you say
