Flower's clear and uncontested serious assault... he should be banned from playing and be charged with GBH.... you can't do that and expect to get away with it. Thug.

Has he been arrested yet?

I don't play rugby, but even I know the aim of the sport is to get the egg-shaped ball over your opponents line.

It doesn't say fists should be thrown - AT ALL

It's highly physical contact sport played by muscled up alpha males, pumped up with adrenalin. Fists are thrown at most RL games I watch, without much drama. The second Flowers punch on a ko'd prone and vulnerable guy is something like I've never seen before, it was a totally disproportionate violent act.

I always thought GBH was "serious harm" being inflicted, but as I'm a resident of North Britain I don't know these things as we don't have GBH up here in our barren wastelands. Whatever the offence, he's a thug; the first punch I could have put down to exuberance but the follow-up was just thuggery.

This is as clear as mud...

The maximum penalty is a four to eight game suspension but this can be increased if thought necessary

I've got a slight issue with the first punch being described as exuberance, explainable etc. He punched the fellow hard enough to knock him out - a single punch can kill and isn't excusable.

That's RL for you, it's a ferocious and violent contact sport, people lose their tempers. A pretty magnanimous response from the victim, I am glad legal proceedings look unlikely but a long ban is still needed.

"I don't hold any grudges against Ben," said New Zealander Hohaia, 31."In the heat of the moment, people do some things they regret. I've done some silly things on the field myself."
"He's probably disappointed in himself for not being able to play a part in the game as well."

I find the violence that sometimes creeps into sport to be rather a thing of beauty.

For instance, two of my favourite football matches were Italy versus Chile in the 1962 World Cup and the 1970 Chelsea / Leeds Cup Final replay. They were both so far beyond the Corinthian spirit they were verging on being works of art.

WC 2006, Portugal v The Netherelands aka The battle of Nurnberg is a favourite of mine.
