Was a kid at junior school when all this was happening.
We were glued to a little black & white TV brought into the classroom specially for the amazing space-race stuff.
Around that same time Concord and Jumbo jet were being tested out, technology seemed to know no bounds.
A field trip to Heathrow another great event for us - first to spot a Jumbo was the big prize.
Happy memories, and sad that another hero has departed.

His book, "Lost Moon" is well worth a read. As is Gene Krantz's "Failure is not an Option".

Have read Krantz' book and it is indeed excellent as is flight director Chris Kraft's

One of the iconic astronauts, somehow these guys from the early days are etched in our minds.
I wonder if youngsters who came of age during say the Space shuttle missions think the same way about those astronauts...I suspect not.
RIP...
