I'm not a regular at it

I'm 50 later this year, & my air-travel history is;
1978 (or 1979) = Gran Canaria
October 1998 = Canada (honeymoon)
February 2012 = Florida*

I'm not bothered about going abroad, it just doesn't interest me, but my wife presumes I'm scared of flying

That said, my best flight was back in 2005, when a friend with a Private Pilots Licence took me up in a 4-seater, to fly over the Dales for a couple of hours
Wonderful!!

*Florida 2012 wasn't good for me, physically (or perhaps psychologically afterwards)
I'd fallen heavily on my left knee during a cross-country race, hitting a rock, not long before going

On landing at Orlando, I had problems walking, but put it down to the flight
That continued throughout the time there, I did try running, but it was impossible
It even got to the point of contemplating a private MRI scan whilst there, to see if there was a real problem
On return to the UK, I went to work, could barely walk, booked myself it & was given analgesia (& X-rays)
Later that day, I collapsed, was rushed downstairs to A&E
'Scared the sh1t' out of Sarah, one of the Consultants who I know, as she phrased it to me later, & she still mentions it, if she sees me in running, or cycling clothing

I was kept in overnight (on the Stroke ward!), CT scanned the next day, as past history was the fall, long-haul flight & the collapse
A PE (Pulmonary Embolism) was suspected
Thankfully no blood-clot in the lung (to subsequently travel to the brain)

Just judged to be a mixture of fatigue, painkiller reaction & possible dehydration?

Had a MRI scan on the knee, a couple of weeks later, & I'd chipped the Femur (@ XC race), only just above the knee - hence the pain & difficulty walking

It was hypothesised that the lower cabin air pressure had allowed fluid to get into the chip, & blow it out of place slightly (like ice bursting a pipe)
Still have some issues with knee, I can't make a fast start at a (running) race

Nope. Although I quite like that name. I shagged a Crispian once...
Was he a born-again Crispian? :okay:

It was actually the flight to NZ. I only just became a NZ citizen...
Friends of the family have a new grandchild that was born when the Mum was transferred between the South and North islands in labour due to the lack of SCBU beds. What do you end up putting as your place of birth, ignoring the country bit.... Does it end up being where you land?

I don't mind flying. I used to have to fly a lot with work. These days it's mainly for holidays.

I've been in all sorts of planes (including some really rickety old Soviet ones) and not had any real worries.

Helicopters are different. On the whole I'm OK if it's a passenger helo and I'm sat nicely in the back and the flight is smooth. But on occasion I've been on military transports and they're very different, particularly when they're small or when it's a Chinook and the flight is rough. There's been a few prayers on those occasions.

Around ten years ago, I got stuck in the Nepali Himalayas due to an avalanche. A group of us ended up chartering a helicopter to get out, which turned out to be a Soviet twin rotor transport, apparently a relic from the Afghan war. My wife caused some mirth when she complained about the lack of seatbelts...

I've clocked up nearly 400 hours as a private pilot, I've had 2 Engine failures and managed a safe landing in both cases, 1 partial failure, clipped the top of a tree at night going into Guernsey after the weather turned baaaaad and I also managed to taxi into a warning sign at a small strip in Florida shock loading the engine and writing off the propellor... I also fly a lot for work and I've loved and love every second of it.

I went in a microlight a few weeks ago. Now that's a whole different kind of flying. Seat of pants stuff, so to speak.

People always talk about 'The seat of their pants'

But, what if you are going commando??

I'll get me coat...

Remind me not to come flying with you, you seem a little accident prone.

I love flying, love taking off and landing and I'm ok with airplane food. Turbulence, even a teeny bit, brings me out in a cold sweat though. Had a bad experience once and I'm just waiting for it to happen again I guess.
So, a number of people have said that flying makes them nervous.

From reading this thread, there must be an accumulation of many thousands of hours in the air. But not much talk of danger.

Has anyone ever found themselves in a dangerous situation on a flight?
I keep anxiously scanning the seats for a nun, a pregnant woman, a crippled orphan and a drunken ex-Vietnam helicopter pilot.

You just know the crew are going to pass out and the drunk will have to land the plane...

I was once on a Ryanair flight where the toilet was so bad that it smelled like Satan's Armpit

If that plane had crashed then they would have had a serious biohazard on their hand.... To deal with!
