I seem to be spending a lot of time working away from home @ present & staying in hotels like Hiltons, Holiday inns etc. Buffet breakfast is included.

I am sick of hotel foods or restaurants on a night. There are only so many curries you can eat or pizzas etc.

So, any suggestions of what to do for lunch and more importantly evening meals?

Where are you staying?

I like to eat at a Wagamamas if I'm working away, the food is light and fresh and it's one place where it seems perfectly acceptable to eat on your own.

A nice carvery is a nice diversion once in a while...mind i'm spoiled here, we've a fabulous one locally, fresh roast meat carved in front of you. Been to others and i think its that processed muck, not a patch when you're expecting something really nice.

That's the other good thing about Wagamamas is the consistency across all the branches, you are guaranteed to get a good meal.

On a summers' day, it's quite nice to go and get some fresh rolls or nice bread, cheese, fruit & sit in a park (if there is a nice one), or the hotel balcony, for a change. M&S salad boxes are also quite good occasionally.

Ahhh, a problem I know well....
Fortunately, most of my travel now is European so the nights away bring some of their own regional variation, but being away night after night in the UK does get tedious. I like Telemark's summer idea.

Couple of things:
If you have a choice of hotels, limit the number of 'big-chain' types where the food is a bit less home-made.

Check-out studenty areas of cities, usually you can find interesting more bohemian eateries and good pubs full of studenty 'buzz'

Sometimes you can bribe the chef (a beer sems to work) to make something 'Special' something he likes to cook, most relish the opportunity to show their skills as opposed to cooking by numbers.

I'll often have meals consisting of a combination of starters to provide more variety.

I've stayed in apartments instead of hotels and just cooked!

Otherwise I make an effort to have just one nice big meal a day at a nice restaurant. Though of course finding something nice and reasonable depends on where you are.

Bobby's Bar in Edinburgh.

Or I get a takeaway.

I stay well away from the stodgy panini type stuff sold on trains and chain cafes. And hotel food is rather tasteless. I like the idea about bribing the chef!

apartments are out of the question.

I am sick of stodgy food and over priced food

Find a pub that does half-way decent food. At least you won't have to suffer the terrible quiet of a hotel dining room.

not found one in a town/ city centre so far

I tend to end up in Wetherspoons for the free wifi and cheap drinks (food is not the best though)

If the hotel dining room is quiet you may want to ask the chef to make you something off the menu. It has worked for me in the past when I was fed up of eating standard hotel fare.

Get a small George Foremans Grill and buy pre-prepared salads from M&S/Waitrose etc. and something grillable.
Claim your £10 against tax for supper.

I just get a sandwich and a snack from the nearest shop and eat it in the hotel.

You could be as adventerous as you want and get a full curry or chinese etc and eat it in your hotel room.

They don't care.

Just stay away from room service / minibars
