Popular sports in the US come in spurts of under a minute, the main purpose being to sell hotdogs peanuts and beer and to see if you can draw enough attention to yourself to appear on the big screen. A game that goes for 45 minutes without a break is beyond a US attention span. If England is going the same way, and I suspect it is, you deserve those sports.

That was the joke.

Go back and have a look at your joke. You got the punchline the wrong way around. Should be "Oh I don't know, it seems a good idea to have England play at Wembley. It makes it easier for Manchester United fans to get to games"

Because it keeps more teams interested in the hunt for promotion and fear of the drop, and therefore far fewer dead-rubber games near the end of the season.
and the need to do that suggests what about the decline of football's popularity?

They tried scrapping the draw in an early incarnation of the MLS. It was not a success.
Once heard a premier league ref advocate for score margin bonus points...

Which keeps the ££££'s rolling in.

Why does the season need to be extended? (ditto rugby and stupid play-off system that saw new premiership whipping boys London Welsh getting promoted over Brizzle who finished the season 8 points in front)

promote champions, relegate last placers and if you must have play-offs have them between the relegation candidates in the division above, bar the bottom club, and the promotion chasers in the division below, bar the champions.

We still haven't quite got over this and not being crowned champions around here.

You've just taken me back to my very earliest rugby days at school, days of Cumbrian players Arthur Cowman and Chris Wardlow (never mind David Duckham)Coventry were the team we supported from afar.
Glory days of Coventry are long gone though.... I hear Worcester are up in arms about the potential effect on their academy programme.

Wembley........good stewards, good bar staff, good toilets. Then you take your seat, can't see who's who cos your too far from the pitch, and the "atmosphere" goes straight up and out thro the roof, and all those empty club Wembley seats don't help. I'm an armchair supporter now.
