Footways...

Sorry if this is old hat, but it seems that's what "footpath's" are really called, and seemingly we ride "carriages" which is why we can't use them on the footway, which is fine, but how come the go-carts the disabled and elderly use are okay on them?

I believe the 1866 act banned velocipedes from footways "alongside a carriageway." For some time now I have been walking a short cut to our club meeting place as I thought it was a footway. It does not run alongside a carriageway (aka road) and had just been labelled as part of a national cycleway. The conclusion from all this is that the law is very old and unclear. I now ride that path.
I suggest we use common sense. if there is such a thing...
