Speed limit to be cut in Greenwich Park
January 19, 2010 by Rob Powell
Plans to cut the speed of driving in Greenwich Park have been announced by Margaret Hodge, the Minister for Culture and Tourism.
The speed limit in the park will be reduced from 30mph to 20mph. The change came as part of a package of regulation changes throughout the Royal Parks which were subject to a public consultation last year.
The new regulations will also allow Private Hire Vehicles into the park for the first time, and also bring parking charges, which have been frozen since 2004, and penalties for non payment into line with Greenwich Council car parks.
Subject to parliamentary approval, the changes are expected to come into force in Spring 2010.

Now this is encouraging...

I'm going to get done for speeding! (if it is possible on a bike - please see various other threads!)

Down the hill I can get over 40 - that's two times the limit that must mean a ban!

Yep, it's a Royal Park so they will enforce the limit if you're a cyclist as they do in Richmond Park. That said, I guess it will not be enforced as often as it is in RP.

Will it apply to skateboards as well? I once saw a couple of lads hurtling down that hill on long skateboards, they must have been going close to 30 mph, mental.

Last time I was in Richmond Park, I was very carefully keeping my speed just below the limit, only to have a Parks Police car zip past me.

What is concerning is how do you limit the cars going down that steep hill to 20mph ?

I'd guess bumps.

Not good for us cyclists going up or down the hill

Quite frankly I can't see why that road is not closed off the cars all the time, as it's only used as a rat run during the rush hour, it's closed off at weekends

In Defense of Parks

With the exception of Libraries , and perhaps law courts, parks are the pinnacle of civility - a mark that a people have reached the point where they can dedicate a stretch of land to no other utilitarian cause bar the arousal of pleasure, meditation, socialising, and reflection of the good life.

As such, there is no need for speed in these sacred places.

What's with those Private Hire Vehicles

I get the impression that I'm the only person without one those stickers, the most unlikely vehicles have them, I've assumed it's some sort of rampany scam to avoid the congestion charge

Interesting move. As some of you have already commented, you can get some good speed up down that hill. You still occasionally get overtaken when topping 30mph .

I guess the real test would be how it is enforced. Can't see a Parks Copper sat there with a speed gun hauling in car after car. Judging by some of the comments made to me in the past by Parks Police - "there's a cycle path over there for you to use", "hmmm, not much tread on those tyres" (honestly!) - I fear a cyclist-focused enforcement scheme......bit paranoid, I know....

EDIT: Oops, just re-read it and noticed it's a proposal, not an actual measure being implemented. Looks like I'm getting a bit ahead of myself!
