Found a really nice malt....

Mrs Cube and I spent the first half of the week in a hotel in the Dales. Lovely place, great dog-walking countryside and a dog-friendly hotel to boot.

After a lovely meal we settled in front of the log fire with the dog curled at my feet, and saw they had a nice array of single malts. I ordered and thoroughly enjoyed a large Bruichladdich 15 year old Islay number, and asked them to put it on the bill.

The next night I repeated the magic, and enjoyed that one so much I had another. Mrs Cube noted how much I enjoyed the whisky, so suggested I should ask Santa for a bottle for Christmas.

On leaving and settling up I raised a slight eyebrow at the bar tab, but concluded this was the Dales, and Mrs Cube must have been a tad extravagant with the lime and lemonades.

Once home I decided I would look up the "laddie" in order to help Santa in his ordering choices. I managed to find a "web exclusive" price of £99.99 a bottle. Looks like I'm getting socks again.

Some of the Islay malts are nice, but you don't have to spend that level to enjoy our best export. The Laddie 10 is worth a go, or a short boat ride to Jura gets you a brew more like honey and still very affordable.

Yep but you'd enjoy it immensely. There's a satisfaction to be had in drinking to remember so I tend to buy bottles from distilleries/areas I've been too. Currently got a nice Arran malt and glass in the cupboard from August. And I haven't touched it for a few weeks, so that might change tonight.

Two I have got into recently are Jura Superstition (a hint of smokey but a nice sweeter after taste) and Glenlivet Founders Reserve. I get them when on offer £23-30 a bottle. Both very smooth. I am NOT Into peatty whiskies.

Try the Bruichaladdich Port Charlotte. Plenty of peat and a very nice dram from Islay

Me either which is why I like just the standard Jura, and maybe a Highland Park. You can't really go wrong with Speyside imo.

A much lighter but interesting malt, Old Pultney. Now on its third edition.

The most satisfying bottle of whisky I ever bought was a Waitrose own label 21-year-old Millennium Special Island Malt which they were flogging off for £18. They had three - you begin to see where I went wrong?

An inspection of the label showed it was from Orkney, meaning it was either a 21-year-old Highland Park or a 21-year-old Scapa, either of which I would expect to retail for nearer £100.

I rushed back - all gone. But one was better than none - it was gorgeous.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying up to 50 quid a bottle, but my palate won't do a 100 quid bottle justice. I quite like peaty. That Laddie was sweet and slightly smoky, but not worth three Highland Parks. I've got a smashing Ardbeg on the go, and a Jura Superstition. Ardbeg is on the right side of peaty for my tastes. Think I'll try thePort Charlotte suggested above
