I had my work bike nicked from the garage earlier this year. The police found it dumped round the corner. Our enterprising thief had found a better bike, so abandoned mine. I was kind of insulted.

The bike is never legally yours ,If original owner ever reappears they can demand it back. Seems unlikely to happen now though.
