I've put fat in empty half coconut shells and hung in my tree - but they've not touched it. I couldn't find any seeds to add though, perhaps that's why?

When we lived close to the city centre we used to get a large number of birds in the garden, now we live on the outskirts of the city, the countryside is only a short walk away, we hardly see any birds, there are three fat wood pigeons and a blackbird and that's it.

I was thinking about putting some food out for the birds. I do not usually do that as I have two cats. But as the weather is so bad, the cats do not venture out very often.
Which is the greater risk to the birds, starving or being caught by two cats?

I could put the food on the garden table, so that the birds would see the cats approach.

I have three cats & still feed the birds. The preferred prey of my felines is small rodents. I have loads of birds visiting all year round.

That's the way Speicher. I put my bird food in places where ambush can't happen. Even if my moggie isn't about, someone else's might be.......
