Free anti-virus software recommendation

Other than AVG [which is giving me no end of grief at the moment] what free anti-virus software do you recommend?

i have uninstalled and re-installed AVG, but it comes up with missing component-this-n-that type error messages n stuff in pop-up windows etc.

any recommendations for free anti-virus s/w?

To have "virus database updated" in a robotic, American voice at 3am is quite disturbing!

I used Avast, had been using it for about 2 years but out of interest I downloaded a free trial of Kaspersky it failed to pick up anything so I guess Avast was doin its job, when the free trial runs out I'll be going back to Avast. 'Virus Database has been Updated'

I had 1 PC with Avast.
Now have 2 PCs with Comodo Internet Suite for Firewall/Malware/AV.
Have 3 PCs with nothing at all.

Never had a virus.

1. Don't go to dodgy sites, know what you are opening.
or
2. Go with Comodo.

you need to be aware that most of these AV programs don't work unless you are completely up to date with the relevant service packs for your OS.
It won't tell you that untill you have downloaded and tried to install it grrr
