I have seen it mentioned on here that some of you carry small bottles of air on rides. I don't know if they are suitable from a safety purspecitive. Size just over a foot long. 9 currently available. Location Rotherham, 2 miles from junction 33 of the M1

Got to ask, why are you gifting these and do you know what they are generally used for?

Plenty of users in my neck of the woods, some drivers even seen using balloons while they drive! Please hand these to the authorities for safe disposal.

Nitrous oxide is a long lived (~150 years) green gas that is way worse than CO2. These been to be disposed of via a responsible processing plant.

If you were to fill these up for the potential cycling use, they would contain in various amounts: (N2) (O2) (CO2) (H2O) and many other compounds in various minute amounts. Pretty much the same as what is inside your tyres.

Please do not attempt to have these filled with anything, take them to the recycling centre. No reputable supplier of gases (or anybody who knows what they're doing( will fill these with any gas and to attempt to do so without specialist knowledge would be very dangerous. Don't mess with high pressure stuff, it's a lot more than in a bike tyre.

Anyway, looks like the law is catching up with this stupid, dangerous craze, making them a restricted product. Not sure this will stop the misuse though?

Presumably they're empty, that's why they've been discarded. The example I have is rated at 165bar so orders of magnitude greater than you'll ever need for a bike tyre; I plan on using mine for a tubeless tank if I ever get around to it.

I see no issue with filling one from a track pump (with appropriate fittings) as long as it's re-labelled as compressed air to avoid any mistakes in future..

Could lead to some awkward moments for legitimate cyclists if they have any interaction with an uninformed police officer.... I know my CO2 cylinders for inflating tyres are unmarked and could be hard to prove what they contain if challenged when out and about?

They would have to prove what was in the cyclinder, not just on the shape and material it is made of. Asking for the gas back to inflate a tyre after they have opened it could be interesting.
