I purchased my Giant SCR2 in August last year from a LBS, so it's still under it's 1 year warranty. I took it in for a service a couple of weeks ago and they called to say it needed a new free hub. At the time I asked if that was covered by the warranty and was told "no, it's general wear and tear". However, I've not even had to change the tires so my mileage isn't that great. Do you think I should insist on not paying for this or are they being reasonable expecting me to fork out?

Unbelievable. Any hub that can't do, I don't know, 10,000 miles? is not 'fit for purpose', as the law has it. (I don't know what mileage, but a hub should certainly outlive many, many tyres.)

Yeah thanks for that. I figured tyres and brake pads should go fairly quickly, but I've got an old jallopy bike I've had since 1994 that's done far more miles and never needed any attention beyond brake pads and tyres. I figure a £500 bike should last at least a couple of years before components start to fail.
