Can you explain exactly what you did? How and where was the inner tube applied?

Just cut a section across the tube, about a cm wide (dependant upon the idler width, so what you have looks like a rubber band. Then stretch it over the ider so it sits in the channel, the chain then runs on this rubber surface and not on the hard plastic surface.

That's it. As I have a home made chain keeper, I had to remove the idler first, but on most you'd just release the chain and stretch the band over the idler. As the tube stretches thinner, you need a piece a bit wider than the channel so it covers it all. If it doesn't go in right first time and folds over, it's nigh on impossible to adjust it, so cut it and try again. I had 3 attempts before it went on straight, but as 3 x £0.00p is still £0.00p, I can live with it.
