I found a great program called dropbox, it just looks like a folder on your machine, but it synchronises online when you put things in it.

You can even install it on more than 1 machine and when you boot the other machine it will update the files in the dropbox folder.
Just thought I'd share it with my fellow cyclists, I've found it very useful for files which I need in more than 1 place.

You get 2GB for free or you can pay for more space
If you use this link you get 250mb extra free and so do I.

Dropbox is indeed awesome. It keeps files between my home and work laptops synchronised, with the added benefit that I don't have to remember to update/upload them manually.

If you are working at a computer without dropbox installed, you can still download the file you need from the web interface.

I was sceptical when a work colleague was first telling me about it, but it is brilliant.

Yes, Dropbox works well for me - much better than GoogleDocs, which automatically converts everything into Google's proprietary format. Google's spreadsheet is a pain if you are used to Excel.

However, there is a security issue with Dropbox. Although you can password protect the uploaded files, you cannot stop the automatic synchronisation (at least on the free version). So if someone nicks your PC/Laptop they may not be able to read your files, but if they delete them from your HD they also disappear from Dropbox and every synchronised machine.

If someone has a workround for this, I'd like to know it.

Yes, head to the dropbox website and log in, click account and then My Computers.

You can 'unlink' computers from here. Do that as soon as you think there's a problem with your laptop.

Microsoft do what they call SkyDrive which is free and gives 25gig of storage. Gonna test it out later once my BT Infinity is installed.

I'm running out of space on my laptop and have been thinking of an external hard drive but haven't shelled out. Will this be suitable for storing as many photo's as I can fit it in and freeing up some space? They're backed up on disc or will be.

Dropbox is fantastic. My only complain is that I would prefer to store my base docs on my PC hard drive and then have it replicate into the dropbox folder as a back up. Acess from the laptop is an occasional luxury when on business
