local council in swadlincote derbyshire are doing bike security marking at gresley memorial park so i took the fleet in the car and ended up using the pen myself to mark the frame near the BB and add stickers to deter thieves. Also got a bag of freebies with spoke reflectors(3m kind),reflective wrist bands etc.

That's pretty good.
What sort of pen is it? What do you write on the bike?

Mine are done (with my own pen from W H Smith, not such a cheapskate as you lot). Had one of the bikes parked outside a shop in Bristol and realised my postcode was on show!

I don't know exactly what sort of lighting it was but it was one of the stark cold white discharge types now popular.

Except when you move and want to change the postcode on your laptop, MP3 player etc. etc.!

I've been told that before now. The best option is supposed to be engraving but not really great for bikes. If it catches on I like the idea of carefully hidden RFID tags, but the professional thief would just scan the bike after nicking it and then hunt the things down.

Ultimately - just make sure property including bike's is insured.

edit: I do have a record of the frame numbers stamped into my bikes, and have those registered on a couple of websites.

post code+house number by the BB in silver pen that is then laquered, its definetly permanent cus the 1st bike i wrote my old postcode on having moved a month ago (DOH ) , luckily its a black frame and i have some black touch up so i did it again and painted over the mistake .

I grew up in Midway. Never really came back after I left for uni. I do enjoy my visits back and blasting around the lanes  I love seeing how the place changes... And if I ever do miss the place there's always the I love Swad Facebook group!

If you're still around in the area, I will PM you next time I am around, and we could try and link up for a spin?
