The freehub on my CPX22's is sounding like a graunchy mess on freewheel (on the workstand). I have also noticed some up and down movement on the cassette which wasn't there before.

I'm presuming the freehub is full of gritty rubbish from the 1.5 winters its been going through. I've never had a freehub off before but according to parks tutorial it looks straight forward enough. Is it?

Is the up and down movement likely to be related? Or is that something else such as the axle?

Cheers

The up and down movement on the cassette could be wear or possibly the outer nuts need tightening.

There are many different designs of hub/freehub - what it the hub on the wheel?

Thanks for the assistance Pete. I've taken the axle out and regreased bearings and tightened up the cones to what I feel is about right.

They're felt hubs.

Those presumably are the stock hubs that came with the bike which probably will be pretty well worn by now.

If you have cones and loose/caged bearings check that the races aren't pitted ( I presume it doesn't have sealed bearings anywhere).

There should also be a nut that tightens up freehub.

I'd put everything together and see how the re-greased wheel turns and whether there is any play in the freehub after tightening up. You won't get spares so its a new wheel if anything has worn beyond the point of no return.

thanks again Pete. yes theyre the original wheels although theyre running on my commuter now. Theyve probably done around 3000 miles or so I would think.

I checked everything over when I put them back together and the races have some pretty bad pitting in them, so I guess thats it? Are they replaceable at all?

Depends - if you mean the cone races then yes you might get replacements. If it is the races in the hub then its toast.

If they are toast then just pack them with grease and ride out the rest of the winter with them!

its the cone races. Ive had a search around and can find shimano ones. Ill have to take them out and measure them up? I have a micrometer so Ill give that a try. I might also send a message to the LBS which supplied the bike and ask them if they can get them. Theyre cheapo wheels but worth repairing.

I suspect the cones have the pitting - will be a case of googleing to track them down. I had lots of trouble trying to source a set of cones for wheels they are not longer made but I found them at SJS.

There's a small LBS on Ashley Road, Parkstone by the banks. If you take a cone he will try to get it for you. Very helpful guy.

Cool cheers for that. There doesn't seem to be anything around for 'felt' hubs, I wonder if they're made by someone else.

It's like most stuff - bought in and re-badged from China.

Apart from Campagnolo/Shimano most hubs are 'disposable' and have no spares available. You can get lucky and get replacement cones which although not identical will work.
