Freezing fog and frozen bits

This afternoon I thought I would go for a quick 15 mile spin as the fog that had been covering York all day seemed to be lifting.

Bad move, as I had barely gone a mile before freezing fog descended again. I decided to persevere thinking I couldn't get too cold. However after about five miles I realised that ice crystals were forming all over my clothing, and by the time I got home I had little lumps of ice all over me.

The worse thing was that as soon as I entered my warm house I realised that the end of my willy had gone numb with the cold , and I then went through quite a painful period as it warmed up and returned to room temperature - a bit like frozen fingers warming up, but a lot more painful.

Anyone got any sensible suggestions for avoiding such a mishap in the future?

Had same problem today, I'd have warmed myself up but didn't want to take a hand off the bars because the roads were quite slippy and greasy.

Longjohns under the cycling longs. Keeps my nether regions warm (yes, they are different to boys' nether regions, but this does keep them warm & snug without chafing from the extra layers)

Eek. It was freezing when I went out. Anyway will extra layers not work in the required places? I'm not surprised, I thought the vale of York suffered pretty badly from fogs when I used to cycle there, it used to get very cold on some bits to the east and also in the Rufforth direction.

Sound like the sort of sensible advice my mother would give me

Actually I normally wear longjohns when it gets really cold - I just didn't realise how cold it was going to be today.

Worn on the outside = No chafing.

Well I went out at 7.30 this morning and boy was it cold! Went to meet 515mm in the usual spot and as I turn into the road I think to myself "looks like black ice there" and on cue the front end tucks under and down I go. Thankfully no damage done except to my ego. ;) I get back up, just, as my shoes are slipping and sliding about like a drunk giraffe on roller skates!
